DEMO 2: NORTH EU (SWEDEN)

The key objective of the North European Demo is to scale up the use of flexibility by building on existing operative markets for local flexibility. It is doing so by designing and executing recruitment strategies with connected customers and integrating them to these flexibility markets, where activation and delivery of flexibility from service providers are proven and finetuned. Additionally, the Demo is building on developed solutions from prior projects such as CoordiNet and SthlmFlex which have been implemented and used in already operational markets.

Each DEMO is implementing and analysing results from three different types of flexibility services: consumer centric, grid-centric and cross-sectorial. The interactive graph below shows how each service category is linked to the selected Business Use Cases (BUCs) that are being tested in this DEMO.

The related activities include long-term load forecasts and quantification of flexibility needs in a constrained grid point, procurement and activation of availability contracts, and integration flexibility into DSO grid planning processes and tools for enabling more stable markets and revenue streams for FSPs.

The related activities include short-term flexibility procurement based on congestion forecasting, the activation of the service, as well as the market settlement and delivery verifications.

The related activities include coordination activities and communication between TSO-DSO and DSO-DSO on relevant problems and resolutions enabling further utilization of flexibility services. Examples are market timeline coordination, establishment of data exchange protocols and coordinating flexibility procurement so that actions taken by on system operator do not create and exacerbate issues in another network.

Explore the potential to use water distribution network assets as a source of flexibility for the electrical system. The analyses is focused on the operational behaviour of water assets, identifying monitoring tools and processes, and quantifying the flexibility that can be reliably offered. The objective is to define a tool able to evaluate the flexibility potential of the water system to support electricity network.

PILOTS

The DEMO 2 consists of two pilots, whereas pilot 2.1, led by E.ON, focuses on the market operation of local flexibility markets from a DSO perspective and pilot 2.2, led by E.ON EIS, focuses on the FSP perspective in the participation both on local and global flexibility markets.

Pilot 2.1 drives product development, while Pilot 2.2 ensures those products are put to use. Together, they form a seamless ecosystem where the DSO buys and the FSP sells. The split into 2.1 and 2.2 simply helps us show the unique value created on both sides of the marketplace.

The flexibility products developed within pilot 2.1. are:

Availability Orders	FSPs committed to being available during forecasted congestion periods and received compensation for both availability and actual activation if called upon.
Seasonal Availability	FSPs provided long-term commitments for the entire market season, offering predefined flexibility windows in exchange for a fixed compensation model.
Direct Orders	FSPs could offer flexibility services spontaneously for specific time periods without prior availability commitments, responding to DSO signalled needs.

Pilot 2.2 brought together a diverse mix of resources to showcase flexibility and innovation in the energy market:

Customer-owned Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
Controllable loads/flexibility from large scale energy consumption (e.g., district heating)
Utility-owned assets such as reserve generators and heat pumps

To bring these resources into play, Pilot 2.2 relied on advanced market platforms that enabled real transactions and market participation. Each region adopted the platform best suited to its needs:

SWITCH was used for Hässleholm and Southern Skåne markets.
NODES was used for the Stockholm market.
