CONSORTIUM

BeFlexible is formed by a well-balanced set of 21 partners and 3 Affiliated entities from 7 different European countries (Spain, Italy, Portugal, Belgium, Germany, Sweden and Denmark), providing a multi-stakeholder approach that covers the whole value chain of energy systems and cross sector related services. They have proven experience and differentiated roles, which complement each other to ensure project objectives achievement and its impact at European level.

i-DE is the electricity distribution company (DSO) of the IBERDROLA Group in Spain. iDE gives services to more than 11 million customers and in 2018, i-DE distributed 93,897 GWh of electricity.

I-DE will coordinate the Be Flex project and will lead the Demo sited in Spain. To this regard, they will provide access to the demo site information and to their recognized capabilities and experience in DRES integration in distribution grids. I-DE will also contribute to the simulation & evaluation of replication of the solutions in the electricity market

Iberdrola Energía España is the leading electricity company in Spain in terms of the number of customers and has the role of aggregator for Iberdrola Group in Spain. Iberdrola Energía España’s main role will be the main aggregator for the pilots in Spain

(DEMO3) developing and validating services. Furthermore, they will bring its expertise in the retail business – innovative smart solutions (energy storage, heat pumps, self-consumption and electric mobility) to customers and industries, and in energy management and aggregation to provide DSO and TSO services, as well as cross-sector heating and cooling and mobility service.

Enel Grids (ENEL) is the global business line of the Enel Group dedicated to the management of the electricity distribution service worldwide, delivering power through a network of around 2.3 million kilometers to more than 75 million end users and it is a benchmark in terms of smart metering.

The main function in this project will be leading the real field demonstrations for increasing energy system flexibility by utilizing infrastructures and equipment of its subsidiaries DSOs: EDI (WP4) and EDE (WP6).

EDE (E-Distribución) supplies electricity in 27 provinces in Spain, reaching a total of more than 12.5 million customers. In 2021, their grids distributed 131 TWh, which represents 52% of the total electricity consumption in Spain.

E-Distribución will join the tasks foreseen in WP6 for the implementation of the Spanish pilot in Zaragoza.

EDI (E-distribuzione S.p.A.) is a Distribution System Operator (DSO) and a subsidiary of the ENEL Group, Italy’s largest power company and Europe’s second listed utility by installed capacity. With about 32 million consumers and more than 1,100,000 km lines, e-distribuzione is the second largest DSO in Europe.

E-distribuzione will join all the tasks foreseen in WP4 for the implementation of the Italian demo in Cuneo, Foggia and Benevento.

Gridspertise accelerates the digital transformation of electricity distribution networks worldwide to deliver a new era of sustainable and reliable smart grids through innovative, flexible and customer-driven solutions that are circular by design.

Set-up in 2021 as a carve-out of Enel Grids, Gridspertise is today jointly controlled by the Enel Group and CVC Capital Partners. Gridspertise will support the software developments and adaption of services for the Italian Demo.

Terna S.p.A. is the owner of the Italian national transmission grid for high and extra-high voltage power and is the largest independent electricity transmission system operator (TSO) in Europe.

Terna will support the definition of a shared data exchange architecture aimed at allowing flexibility provision from small, distributed energy resources, along with the other stakeholders involved and test it and support the analysis for the definition of an improved market design allowing flexibility services provision from small costumers to the grid.

Areti is part of Acea group, an Italian multi utility acts on electricity distribution, water distribution, waste management, energy production and energy supply, aggregator and CPO.

Areti is among the main Italian DSO, and it serves more than 2.8 million people and managing a yearly peak power of about 2,2 GW for the urban area. Areti will contribute to defining, together with Technology developers and the standardization body, the communication protocol and interface between customer devices and Operators (including DSO, TSO, Aggregators, etc.). Contribute to defining, with TSO and aggregators, flexibility services provided by customers to the grid.

RSE S.p.A. is a public company entirely owned by the Italian Government that carries out research in the field of energy systems covering the entire electric energy supply chain with an application-oriented, experimental and system-based approach.

RSE will contribute to generating a regulatory framework, defining a set of KPIs for the project and defining a set of services, their use case and business model. It will lead the CBA activities in WP7.

The E.ON Group (with parent company E.ON SE based in Essen, Germany) is one of the world’s leading privately owned energy operators with over 70,000 employees and a global presence through operating units operating in several European countries.

E.ON’s main role in the project is to lead the Swedish Demo and will bring its expertise in energy commercialization and aggregation to provide DSO and TSO services, as well as cross-sector heating and cooling and mobility service.

EONEIS is a subsidiary of the E.ON Group and focuses on customer solutions such as energy sales, energy efficiency, district heating and cooling and the development of the new energy system. EONEIS delivers approximately 5 TWh hours of district heating to customers in Sweden.

EONEIS will carry out a pilot where loads in the building will be unlocked for flexibility reasons, both for DSO and TSO markets. Furthermore, EONEIS will investigate how it can act as an aggregator for flex suppliers through various balancing and optimization solutions that enable aggregated flex capability combined with a P2P flexibility market or pre-existing market platforms.

SAP is the market leader in enterprise application software, developing solutions that facilitate effective data processing and information flow across organizations. SAP provides an Industry Solution for Utilities run by the main energy players worldwide and hosts an Energy and utilities marketplace in the SAP Store.

SAP will define and develop a scalable DSO platform on European Level. SAP will design and launch the GDBN and will leverage the leadership of SAP Labs France in EV and suitable energy deployment to run a pilot. Work done by SAP from SAP SE, SAP LABS France and SAP Portugal, Lda. and Centro Serviços.

Schneider Electric provides energy and automation digital solutions for efficiency and sustainability. Schneider Electric combines world-leading energy technologies, real-time automation, software and services into integrated solutions for homes, buildings, data centers, infrastructure and industries.

Schneider Electric’s role could be summarized as DERMS provider, and they will contribute mainly to WP3 but also it will be part of the WP1 for the regulation topics and the WP8 & WP9 to assist on the EC&D, clustering activities and CBP and the Project management.

Universidad Pontificia Comillas will be represented by its institute for Research in Technology (IIT), with over 60 researchers and 40 full-time doctoral students.

They have participated in more than 15 EU-funded projects related to smart grids, and have a dedicated department with wide experience in the application of SSH to the energy sector. Universidad Pontificia Comillas will lead two WPs related to regulation, market design BeFlexible 70 | 70 (WP1) and the evaluation of those proposals (WP7). In addition, Universidad Pontificia Comillas will support other tasks building and evaluating the implementation of the demonstrators. The social department will contribute to KA7&8, and WP2.

INESC TEC is an Associate Laboratory with 35 years of experience in R&D and technology transfer. It is internationally recognized for its expertise in problems relating to the integration of renewable energy in power systems, distributed generation and smart grids, the areas traditionally associated with planning and operating power systems.

INESC will bring data-based services for rapid energy community instantiation and market-based operation, potential flexibility assessment, data-market and tools for system operators. Furthermore, they will develop (alongside SAP) the GDBN.

As one of the Universities in Germany awarded the status of “Excellence University”, RWTH Aachen University, established in 1870, is a leading technical university in Germany and Europe.

It has over 45,000 students and more than 500 professors, and count with experience in Open science. RWTH Aachen with its institute ACS will be involved in different WPs of the project. Major efforts will be placed in the development and integration of the different flexibility services proposed in BeFlexible. Moreover, ACS will bring in its ICT experience for the development of open IT Architectures in support of the activities for the definition of the BeFlexible ecosystem and for the implementation within the pilots.

ENG is the head company of the ENGINEERING Group. Engineering was founded in 1980, and it is currently the first IT group in Italy, and among the top 10 IT groups in Europe, with approx. 12.000 employees.

Engineering has a consolidated presence on all vertical markets and operates through its 4 business units: Public Administration & Healthcare, Telco & Utilities, Industry & Services, Finance.

ENG main role is to bring the link between the energy and safety sectors providing a set of services.

STEMY encourages citizens to optimize their energy use to have a lighter footprint on the planet. For that purpose, over the last 10 years, we have developed a self-learning smart energy solution called SPLODER, which is a cloud-based platform able to optimize existing energy infrastructure one consumer at a time without affecting the customer experience, whilst streamlining the flexibility of the grid.

STEMY contributes to simulate and integrate customers into the wholesale markets for DER operation to provide flexibility with cross-sector synergies.

Thermovault’s retrofit hardware and self-learning algorithms optimise the energy flows of domestic thermal loads such as electric water heaters, storage heaters and heat pumps. This solution increases device efficiency and improves the way the device is used, operating the controlled device at a lower cost while maintaining comfort. This control also enables the aggregation of domestic thermal loads for the provision of flexibility.

In the project, Thermovault will offer its solutions to control and retrofit domestic thermal loads with the objective of achieving energy savings and providing grid flexibility.

Soulsight is a strategic design consultancy that helps organisations to innovate through solid strategies based on research, creativity, culture, business and design.

In BeFlexible, Soulsight will ensure the customer engagement based on social incentives, lead WP2 and GAP definition, and support DEMO1&3.

Smart Innovation Norway’s main purpose is to practice independent, applied research within the fields of renewable energy and information technology, supporting customer behaviour and engagement in the energy industry.

They are specialised in uncovering market and customer insights supporting the development of business models and services linked to the digitisation of the energy sector and applying strategies to support local communities to execute their energy transition ambitions.

Timelex is a law firm based in Brussels, specialised in information and technology law in the broadest sense, including privacy protection, data and information management, e-business, intellectual property and telecommunications.

Timelex will take care of the legal and regulatory aspects, in particular with regard to privacy and personal data protection. In this regard, TLX will contribute to define the framework for data management, analysis and integration related tasks and provide support for IPR matters. TLX will lead the legal and ethical work conducted within the project, defining the DMP.

E.DSO promotes and enables customers empowerment and the increase in the use of clean energy sources through electrification, the development of smart and digital grid technologies in real-life situations, new market designs and regulation. E.DSO gathers +40 leading electricity distribution system operators (DSOs) in 24 countries.

E.DSO alongside with Zabala Innovation, will make sure to establish an appropriate D&C strategy with the necessary strength to encourage other important stakeholders in the energy sector to embrace the solutions using their influence as an EU association involving more than 40 DSOs.

Zabala Innovation currently provides DC&E services and R&D management to coordinators of around 60 projects, being also involved as partner or as coordinator.

Zabala Innovation alongside with E.DSO, will make sure to stablish an appropriate Dissemination, Communication and Exploitation strategy with the to encourage other important stakeholders in the energy sector to embrace the solutions, leading WP8. Also, Zabala Innovation will lead the Exploitation and IPR management.
